You can own your very own Porsche 918 Spyder for the low low price of $8,500! Interested?

You bet you are.

To sweeten the pot, they’re only building 918 examples of the car. Talk about exclusivity! The catch?

It’s not exactly a Porsche 918 Spyder. Well, it is, but it’s a 1:8 scale model.

Yes, you read correctly. Porsche is selling a 1:8 scale model of its amazing 918 Spyder hybrid supercar for $8,500 to 918 lucky (or crazy, we’re not quite sure which) souls who want one.

I have to admit, as a collector of die cast myself (but of the 1:64 variety mostly), the concept is pretty cool. The true-to-live resin model is hand crafted, and has 165 individual parts. All of them are painted Liquid Metal Silver, and they come with a wooden base and an acrylic display case. This thing weighs 44 pounds. It’s not a toy. It’s a serious collector’s item.

But it’s also $8,500.

On the bright side, compared to a REAL Porsche 918 Spyder, which starts at $845,000, the car is at least better than 1/8 the price… right? RIGHT?

If you’re one of 918 brave souls who are flush with cash, you can head to the Porsche Masterpiece shop to pick your very own 918 Spyder miniature.

Actually, you know, the 918 Spyder model might be a bit too rich for my blood, but the GT3 cup shelf is pretty boss. I need some of that in my life. Just look at it. Imagine your books resting proudly on that fine piece of automotive art.

Mmm yes. Nothing says conspicuous consumption quite like an $8,500 model kit and a $4,230 shelf.

You could pair them together, or for similar money, you could probably pick up a Porsche Boxster.

This would be more fun, but would definitely cost more in the long term...

Decisions, decisions….
